I also took the opportunity to clear through more emails whilst waiting for the rest of the team to gather for our evening out. Popping into Boyds Grill and Wine Bar next door, which was readying for opening, I called my Ops Director Sami on Microsoft Teams to collaborate remotely and talk through how the rehearsal went that morning, leaving me hands free with the device in Tent mode on the table. Heading into 8 Northumberland Avenue to plan a future event, I took 4K videos and photos with the 11MP camera of the grand ballroom in situ and quickly sent them via Outlook whilst walking around the site. I could see all my lists again across both Duo screens which made navigating through them incredibly efficient. Whilst the TV studio I was working with have a professional teleprompter at eye level with the camera, I was able to put Duo into Tent mode and have my own view of the opening speech.įrom there, I grabbed an Uber to my office and I was able to view calendar and emails alongside each other and tick off a few urgent replies from my to do list on Trello. To be able to pull up the running order and to scroll through on both screens in Book mode, whilst moving around the set, meant that I could share with the crew and Kerrie, my event producer. I was running for Weatherbys Private Bank the next day in Byline TV Studios. On the train into central London, I was able to read, view and respond to a few emails before I headed to a client rehearsal for a hybrid event. On the station platform it was quick and easy to check Citymapper on one screen and my map on the other side by side to compare journey times. Popping the device into my small messenger bag I headed to my nearest train station. So, how did it fit into my working day? How did I use it on the move? Opening the device and revolving the screens using the 360-degree rotation hinge enables the device to stand up by itself in Tent mode, allowing hands free video viewing in transit. ![]() When you use Duo to type emails, a keyboard appears on the lower screen, making it easy to type with two hands, rather than the index finger most often used for typing on hand-sized devices which makes sending emails on the move quicker and easier. The screen is responsive, so you can move between modes, and usefully you can drag one app across two screens to make the most use of the viewing estate width – perfect for reading more in-depth news articles, browsing the web or reading an event schedule. We know how useful two screens are in our office or working from home, but really to have this capability on the move is amazing. To have your emails alongside your calendar or your ‘to do’ lists alongside your web browser, for me, is a joy to have in your pocket. ![]() You can create App Groups to launch any two apps simultaneously, each on its own full screen. ![]() The dual screen functionality is really what I have been waiting for in a device of this size. It opens and closes softly like a book and the two screens can fold all the way around until they are back-to-back and you have two screens on the outside of the device - perfect for taking photos with the 11MP camera or making calls. This new device sets out to make your mobile work station truly productive, which fits in your pocket and enables you to attend to your business and personal needs on the move. Its glacier-coloured smooth exterior comes thankfully with a bumper that you fix to the rim after you’ve added a sim card to protect against bumps and scrapes. If you’ve not yet seen the new Microsoft Surface Duo, it’s a dual screen device which, at 4.8mm thick when open, is the thinnest mobile device on the market. I was delighted to be invited by Microsoft to road test the new Microsoft Surface Duo and see how this slim, light device and entirely new Surface form factor improved my productivity on the move in a busy working day.
